Unofficially at 5:35pm, and officially at 9:21pm our home became an empty nest. On Sat. we sent the youngest off to college in his car that we had packed tightly as in Tetris tight. We spent the week trying to figure out what was needed in his off campus dorm. The word was everything. Lucky for us as pack rats, we found various hodge podge of stuff to accommodate them for the time being. We promised to come up the following weekend with what ever else they needed.
Upon returning from a brief stay in San Francisco for a friend's daughters wedding, we came back to prepare #2 for his move to Seattle. He is the one who landed in the land of coffee and drizzle at 9:21pm. His move seems more permanent as he enters Law School. He has to go through the process of changing his drivers license, obtaining health care, a car, insurance, etc. all within two weeks. Of course to him, this is nothing compared to landing in Paris with no language ability or anything else set up for him.
To us, it seems so ....... permanent, and quiet.

Vintage
Our trusty Imac suddenly died. Gayle is in a panic as all of her school records, handouts, homework, etc. is on that computer. Our digital picture files and just about everything else is still stored beyond that dark computer screen. I somehow have developed a distrust for all my personal stuff floating in the Cloud. After making my appointment with the Genius's at the Apple store, I was told it was a "Vintage" Mac and that it probably was not worth fixing. It isn't. So my curiosity has compelled me to spend the evening taking it apart to get to the hard drive. At least that was fun.
Our now running joke is that we are not old, but of the Vintage Age. We have become more aware of our age situation since we are now attending Lighthouse Community Church of Torrance with Jeff Tiff and the grandson. We find that there are not a lot of people attending that church of the Vintage age, and it becomes obvious as we try to find common ground. We have become the age of discussing passing of friends, ailments and medications, and the wonder of how the new generation is adjusting to their new role as families.
The goal is to use the Vintage age into something of Value, whether it be in the community, church or with friends.
Flying the Coop
It's been a wild course of events recently. #2 has accepted the response from the University of Washington Law School and will be starting in Sept. He is moving up next month to Seattle and his mom is not happy. The fear is that he will not be coming back to Southern Cal for years to come. He is the one who has been helping out in her classroom each day, and kept her sane.
He got an assortment of acceptances, wait listed and rejections. Some of the choices were tempting in that they were offering some generous financial packages. He went though a process where he flew out to Chicago where he found out that he was the diversity of the incoming classes at both Law Schools. His trip to Seattle was more to his liking in comparison. He did like the city of Chicago and has a college room mate attending med school at one of the offering universities.
In the end, UW won out due to it's ranking and financial package offered. He is officially a Husky. He does have a roommate from college living up there working for Amazon, his aunt (my sister) and uncle as well as his cousin and wife if he ever gets lonely or hungry.
We will see how a southern Cal boy will adjust to the weather and lifestyle of the Northwest.
